It’s kind of true. While I’ve found *alphas* again after Fifty, the one’s that have given me back Christian’s intensity and emotion (and occasional lack thereof) are few and far between. I will now think of books as “Before 50” and “After 50″… It’s also a good idea to place a warning label on the books…maybe a silver tie shaped “WARNING: This book may seriously impair your ability to enjoy any further reading” label.” Gray on your page and my curiosity has gotten the best of me. “I’ve been reading about the mysterious Mr. These are my favorite lists to make, but this one’s been hard on me!! There have been many recommendations and suggestions (keep ’em coming!) but not all have given me that “Fifty” feel, ya know? I mean… come on… What the heck can live up to Fifty? It’s been said many times, that Fifty’s ruined us for all others. I will personally “taste-test” each book (hehe) that makes this list before I add it to the main part. The trouble is, it’s ultimately too chicken to answer them. But as someone who centers women in my politics and is very interested in the strictures of marriage culture, this movie brings up some questions that I think are integral to modern discussions about heterosexual female self-empowerment. Wilson: I do think that, as a lesbian, Fifty Shades will always be somewhat of a meme to me. Loofbourow: How does a movie called Book Club end without one? Hampton: See, if the movie was subversive, Marissa sitting next to me would’ve been fine because platonic love is just as important! But that’s not what the movie did!
Martinelli: I was sitting right next to her!!!! Kidding. Hampton: I wanted a buddy flick, and I ended up leaving thinking the same thing I always leave romance movies thinking: Damn, I’m still alone. Even that scene where someone was reading aloud alone was played for deep embarrassment. Loofbourow: Yes! And instead the movie was really so shy about saying the words out loud. Hampton: Exactly! I wanted a movie entirely predicated on white wine and dick jokes. Hampton: Yeah, I think the most enjoyable plot points were them together discussing this book, which is what I thought the entire movie was going to be.
